1. I've never practiced martial arts/Judo/etc. before-can I still join? How do I join?
A: YES! We welcome new members at all times, even at the end of the semester. Just come to class.
2. I am an advanced judoka-will Illini Judo be challenging enough to keep my interest?
A: Yes! We have a range of belts practicing together, frequent randori, and opportunities to go to clinics and tournaments throughout the year.
3.Do I have to be a student at the University of Illinois to join the club?
A: Nope. However, you must be at least 17 and willing to sign a liability waiver (co-signed by parent if under 18).
4. Where/how often do you train?
A: We reserve the combat room Tuesdays & Thursdays from 6:30pm-8:30pm. Class begins promptly-show respect to your fellow judokas by not being late and being quiet and respectful when joining an already in-session class.
5. I don't have a gi-what should I wear? Where can I get one?
A: Shorts and a T-shirt. We are barefoot on the mats. We have a discount through Adidas and do two orders as a club per year. You can also find judo gis and belts online from similar suppliers like Mizuno. The cost of a basic white gi is ~$40 through the club.
6. I'm not sure I'm ready to commit-can I come for a trial lesson?
A: Yes, you may come to six classes (2 weeks) of lessons before we ask you to pay dues.
7. What are the fees/costs associated with joining Illini Judo?
A: Our lesson structure is as follows:
$60/year (fall & spring)
$35/semester
$20/summer
$20 Belt Testing Fee + $10 Cost of belt
This is for unlimited classes. These fees allow us to rent the combat room, subsidize travel to clinics/competitions, and occasionally host them ourselves. ***ALL money is reinvested in the club***
8. Do I have to compete?
A: No, although we encourage every member to take the opportunity to compete to improve their skills.
9. How do I pay dues/get reimbursed?
A: Please bring dues to class in the form of cash or check and/or contact the current Treasurer to make other arrangements . We also accept debit/credit cards when the Treasurer is present. Please make checks out to the current Treasurer (see Contact page) with ILLINI JUDO in the memo line and be sure to take your receipt =)
For reimbursements, be sure to have all supporting documentation-must be original, itemized receipts, and printed on or stapled to a plain 8 ½ x 11 white printer paper.
**Please note that proof of payment by payee is required to illustrate that that individual actually incurred and paid the charges for which they are seeking reimbursement.
***Only guest instructors will be reimbursed for ARC entrance. Outside guests are responsible for their own admission.
